Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Overview:

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is a rare condition in which a tumor called a gastrinoma develops in the
pancreas or duodenum. The tumor produces high levels of the hormone gastrin, which causes the stomach to produce too much acid. This can lead to peptic ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, as well as other gastrointestinal symptoms.Symptoms of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, andweight loss. Peptic ulcers can cause bleeding in the stomach or small intestine, which can lead to anemia or blood in the stool.

Treatment:

Treatment for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome typically involves surgery to remove the tumor, as well as
medications to reduce stomach acid production. These may include proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and
H2 blockers, which can help alleviate ulcer symptoms and prevent complications like bleeding. In some
cases, chemotherapy may be used to shrink the tumor before surgery. It’s important to see a doctor if you experience persistent abdominal pain or other gastrointestinal symptoms, as early diagnosis and treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can help prevent complications like bleeding and perforation of the stomach or small intestine.
